History lessons are frequently discussed in public, but rarely in scholarly conversations. This book aims to change that by proposing a novel analytical model of historical learning that begins with the basic three-fold perspective that everyone is, shares, and creates history at the same time. However, not all historical events may be used to extract lessons. Borderline historical occurrences, which have both time-specific and time-transcending characteristics, are proposed as useful educational material. Scholarly writings on the Holocaust and Soviet terror, ranging from Raul Hilberg’s and Robert Conquest’s classic 1960s works to more current volumes by Jan Gross and Timothy Snyder, are studied to find historical lessons and how they have altered over a half-century.
